Job Description 

 

Position:         Intern –Firebreak/Agricultural Development Technician

Location:         Hay River         . 

Rate of pay:    $35.00 per hour to start 

Reporting:       This position reports to and takes direction from the Executive Director

Hours:             37.5-hour week (some flexibility in scheduling)

Land development

  • Identification and implementation of best practises for land clearing to support firebreak food production incorporating regenerative techniques

  • Assist in building appropriate structures

  • Develop various demonstration plots

  • Plant, maintain and harvest as appropriate

  • Identify and possibly begin development of a food forest model project

 

Sustainable Development

  • Development of a sustainable development plan for food production in a firebreak

 

Knowledge Mobilization

  • Document and share best practises

  • Develop and deliver experiential events on site

  • Develop social media and informational documents for the public

 

Community Development and Outreach

  • Liaise with and learn from local traditional knowledge holders and community members

 

Organizational responsibility

  • Support other programs and initiatives of the organization as requested/needed

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the team.

 

Post internship

  • At the conclusion of the Internship, we intend this position to transition into a FT Agricultural tech position

 

Ideal Characteristics:

  • has training, education or experience in agriculture

  • Is comfortable with physical labour

  • Has experience on the land and is comfortable on the land

  • Detail-oriented, quick-working

  • Interested in ecology, sustainable and regenerative agriculture

  • Comfortable working with youth and speaking to groups

  • Physically fit and able to work in all weather conditions

  • Has access to reliable transportation (at a minimum a driver’s license)

  • Self-starter

  • Friendly and finds it easy to connect with others

  • Likes variety

  • Has a natural sense of urgency

  • Able to go with the flow
